3. Conditions requiring temporary deferral

1. Abortion

Donors who have had abortion should be deferred for a period of 6 months.


2. Accident

Deferral depends on the severity of the accident. Individuals who have had a major accidentmay not be accepted for 6 months after the event and 4 weeks after a minor accident.


3. Acupuncture

Any individual undergoing acupuncture treatment should be debarred from blood donation for 6 months, to cover the incubation period of hepatitis B infection which may be transmitted through infected needles.


4. Alcoholism

Occasional alcohol consumer may be deferred for 24 hours after the alcohol intake.


5. Allergy (hay fever, drug allergy)

These individuals may donate blood when not affected. Those receiving desensitizing injections should be deferred for 72 hours after the last injection. Patients with severe allergy are however, permanently deferred.


6. Anemia

Prospective donors suffering from anemia may be accepted after successful tratment.


7. Asthma

Individuals with acute episode of asthma may be deferred till they are symptom free. If on regular medication debar permanently.


8. Blood donation

The interval between donation of whole blood should be 3 months.


9. Blood transfusion

If the donor has received transfusion of blood/blood components, he may be deferred for 6 months.


10. Common cold

Donors suffering from an acute attack of common cold may be deferred till symptom free. If on medication, defer for 1 week after stopping the medication.


11. Contact with a patient of Infectious disease

If donor is in contact with such a patient, donation should be deferred for the length of the incubation period.


12. Dental treatment

Defer for 3 months after a major dental treatment. Donors may be accepted when symptom free after a minor dental manipulation.


13. Drugs and medication

A careful history of drug intake should be elicited from all donors. The blood unit from donors who have taken aspirin or aspirin containing drugs within the last 7 days, should not be used for preparation of platelets. Intake of oral contraceptive pills is not a disqualification for blood donation. Patients on antibiotics should be accepted 1 week after the last dose. The blood bank officer should carefully evaluate donors for othe medication and drugs.


14. Ear piercing/tattooing

These procedures carry a risk of transmission of hepatitis and HIV, so blood donation should be deferred for 6 months.


15. Fracture

Patient with a fracture of bone should not be accepted as a donor for 6 months.


16. Immunization & Vaccination

If a donor has been immunized with live vaccines, he should not donate blood for 2 weeks following immunization. In the case of rubella, the interval should be 4 weeks. In donors immunized with killed vaccines (cholera, typhoid, hepatitis B) or toxoids (tetanus) the interval is 48 hours.

Donors who have received immunoglobulin after having been exposed to infectious agents should not donate blood for the duration of the incubation period.

If rabies vaccination has been given after the bite of a rabid animal, blood donation should not be accepted for 1 year.

If hepatitis B immurioglobulin has been given after exposure to the virus, donation should be deferred for 9 months to 1 year. Donors receiving hepatitis B vaccine may be accepted 6 months after the last dose.


17. Infectious disease

* Hepatitis

If the donor has not had an attack of hepatitis during the last 12 months, he is fit to donate blood. If the donor has had close contact with a patient of viral hepatitis, he should be deferred for 6 months. Donors who give history of hepatitis may be accepted at the discretion of the medical officer if HBsAg negative.

* Malaria

Donors who have been diagnosed as suffering from malaria and who have been treated are accepted 3 months after therapy in endemic areas.

* Tuberculosis

Donors may be accepted 2 years after the disease has been successfully treated.


18. Pregnancy and lactation

Defer during the period of pregnancy and for 1 year after delivery. Donors may be accepted 6 months after stopping lactation.


19. Skin disease

Presence of skin disease at the venepuncture site may be a reason for deferral till it is successfully treated.


20. Surgical procedurs/major illness

Donors should be deferred for 6 months after a major surgery Individuals who undergo a minor surgical procedure should be deferred for a period for 3 months.
