Conditions requiring permanent deferralIf the donor suffers from any of the disease conditions mentioned below, he/she should be rejected permanently from blood donation either due to risk from donation to the donor or due to the risk of transmitting certain infections to the recipient which the donor may be harbouring. 1. Abnormal bleeding tendencies Patients with abnormal tendencies to bleed shouldbe permanently excluded from donation, either due to risk of excessive bleeding from the venepuncture site or acquiring HBV, HIV, etc. if non transfusion therapy. In addition, as the blood may be deficient in coagulation factors, it is not suitable for component preparation. 2. AIDS (groups with high risk behaviour/signs and symptoms suggestive of AIDS). Exclude individuals with * Unexplained weight loss * Chrohic diarrhoea * Lymphadenopathy (generalized) * Intravenous drug addition * Heterosexual/Homosexual promiscuity * Sexually transmitted diseases 3. Allergic disorders Individuals with severe allergy should be excluded from blood donation as hypersensitivity may be transferred to the recipient for a short period. 4. Autoimmune disorders Patient with autoimmune diseases such as sytemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis should be deferred permanently from blood donation. 5. Cardiovascular disorders Exclude individuals with cardiovascular disorders such as - low/high blood pressure - myocardial infraction/anginapectoris - circulatory problems 6. Cerebrovascular disorders Diseases such as stroke are cause for permanent deferral. 7. ChronIc alcoholism Individuals who are on chronic alcohol intake may have associated high risk behaviour and thus are rejected permanently. 8. Chronic renal disease Chronic renal disease necessitates permanent exclusion. The symptoms associated with renal disease must be explained to the donor. 9. Diabetes mIllitus. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus are rejected as donors specially if on insulin therapy. 10. Endocrinal disorders Donors With hyperthyrodism or any other endocrinal disease for which the donor is receiving continuous therapy should be permanently excluded. 11. Epilepsy Patients with epilepsy must not be accepted as donors. 12. Hepatitis B carriers Donors who have had a positive test for 1-IBsAg should be retested after 6 months and if found positive, are rejected permanently. 13. Infectious diseases Disorders such as AIDS, syphilis, hepatitis B, kala-azar, filariasis, active tuberculosis and granuloma inguinale necessitate permanent deferral. 14. Liver disease Any active inflammatory or degenerative disease of the liver that impairs organ function is a cause for permanent rejection of the donor. 15. Malignant disorders All diseases of malignant origin are a contraindication to blood donation.
